Innovative Law Users Group

March 28, 1995

Dear Innovative Law User,

This packet is the second mailing of the Innovative Law Users Group for 1994-1995. According to our records, you are the designated ILUG contact person for your library. Please make copies and share the enclosed documents with appropriate members of your library's staff.

Included in this packet are:

Please note the following deadlines:

IUG online directory data sheetMay 1, 1995
ILUG election ballotMay 1, 1995

The response to the first ILUG mailing this year for the IUG online directory entries available for free to all III libraries through the InnView service was quite good. I am pleased to report that now slightly over 50% of all ILUG libraries have entries in this online directory. Access to directory information in this way has proven to be quite useful to many of us. For those of you whose libraries are not yet included in this database, I have included another copy of the IUG directory data sheet. Please fill out this form and submit it as soon as possible. You do not have to be connected to the Internet in order to be listed in the IUG directory. Later this spring we will download all of the law library entries and publish them as a print directory for those libraries who do not yet have access to the InnView service via the Internet. If you do not submit a data sheet, your library will not be included in this print directory!

We have decided to present a half-day workshop in Pittsburgh this year at a hotel on Saturday morning before the ILUG business meeting. The topics to be covered are not finalized, but there is a lot of interest in a presentation about Z39.50, statistical reports with special emphasis on structuring data fields so that ABA statistics can be obtained easily for academic libraries, tapeloading records to/from the local Innovative system, and financial closings. There will be an III staff leader for this workshop. For those of you traveling to AALL, you may want to consider this workshop as you make your travel arrangements. More details will be available in the late spring.

Your involvement with the other items included in this packet is critical for the healthy future of the ILUG. We have an outstanding slate of candidates for the position of Vice Chair/Chair Elect to assist Carole Hinchcliff as she assumes her duties as Chair in July. Interest and participation in the ILUG continues to grow. Please take the time to read over the candidate information sheet and submit your ballot by May 1.

I hope to see lots of you in Oakland in April at the IUG conference. A request for a "show of hands" via the law-lib and innopac discussion lists resulted in about 60 law librarians expressing their intent to be in Oakland. The last count I received for total registration for the conference was around 300, so it looks like once again law libraries will be well represented. Our law library meeting will be on Monday, April 24, from 9:25 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. We'll have a break in the middle! Pat Callahan and Christine Dulaney have been hard at work putting together a list of questions to help guide our discussion about how to use Innopac effectively to gather data necessary for the ABA statistics questionnaire. A memo from Pat and Christine is included in this packet. Please come to the law library discussion session at the IUG conference and be prepared to talk (or listen) about these issues. We may also have a brief report from a law library Release 9 beta test site, and there will be plenty of opportunity to talk about other burning issues as well. If your library will be represented at this meeting, please pass this information along to the appropriate person.

Thanks for your help in making this a great year for die ILUG. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or other helpful ideas.
